Sol y mar

Mi Primer Batik / My First Batik

This is my first batik. My very first! When I was clueless about batik. It isn’t really pretty, but it was my first lesson and just because of that it deserves some respect. The design of the flower isn’t mine (it’s pretty obvious if you know my style). I must have taken it from a pattern magazine or something. The colors aren’t my favorites; I didn’t choose them they happened as the result of adding colors. That ugly brown! I like the halo around the flower though. This happens if you don’t wax the whole fabric.

I also learned not to sign my work with wax, it’s complicated and it’s not worth it. You can spoil the work with an ugly signature, especially if you don’t’ have a good handwriting and you lack the patience to practice and get better.

En yute / On jute

Small experiments on jute. I like them, but jute is not the best for batik. The weft is too open and a white background is needed to appreciate the design and the color. Besides it is so thick that it absorbs a lot of wax and the ironing takes even more time. I like it on small sizes. I did a big one and didn’t’ like it because I got tired of ironing it. I still have it somewhere, still with lots of wax on it.

One day when Miggie was visiting us, she came with me at my batik workshop. I gave her a piece of fabric and she did this. I like it very much, not just because she did it, but also because of the very interesting effect of the craquel on the fish.

Colina con casas / Hiil with Houses

I’m particularly fond of this batik. I like the colors and the craquel. I made it on batiste fabric, softer and more delicate that the popeline fabric I usually work with. This is a very fragile batik because I left it in the chlorine vat for too long and the fabric weakened. I’m afraid it may tear if I handle it. So I keep it carefully stored and I haven’t yet tried to iron it.
